THAT HOUSE WITH THE BLUE DOOR (AIRBNB)

By Kristin Archer

No better way to “be a tourist in your own city” than with a mini staycation! Back in April I had an amazing birthday month (#KApril!) treat by staying at a local Airbnb for a night. I came across a gorgeous space in downtown Hamilton, most recognizable as #ThatHouseWithTheBlueDoor. Ran by Airbnb Superhosts (Superhosts are experienced, highly rated hosts) Kelly and Andy, the space is a stunning modern industrial loft.

When settling in, I was immediately at home – serious home decor goals! I would love a space like this! After greeting me, Andy encouraged me to take a good look around, noting there is something to see everywhere you look, every drawer and cupboard. Andy and Kelly also love to spoil their guests with a treat upon arrival. One favourite is a baked good from neighbouring shop Cherry Birch General. In honour of my birthday month, they went big with two amazing Donut Monster delicacies (and a bottle of wine!). They know how to make a gal feel welcome.

Welcoming guests from all over the place, Kelly and Andy are thrilled to show off all things local. Out-of-towners could never be at a loss for what to do in Hamilton during their stay – there were copies of current Hamilton publications, takeout menus, and arts and culture guides to the city. There were also lovely local touches including True Hamiltonian decor and soap and lotion from Pure Home Couture.

The place has a beautiful living space with exposed brick walls and hardwood floors, comfy couch, and television with Netflix at the ready! There is also a cute office space to get some work done, but I opted for setting in on the couch with my laptop (and indulging in a donut).

You could also never go hungry with all of the fantastic food options in every neighbouring area, but the place also has stocked cupboards and a fridge with items for breakfast, tea and coffee, and quick meals like soup and pasta. I enjoyed a tasty bowl of yogurt and granola in the morning along with a couple clementines they left for me!

For dinner during my stay, I ventured out. My home for the night was so cozy, though, I opted to bring food back. I beelined right for a classic – Nabil’s Grill (1 Wilson Street off James North) for a tasty falafel dish with salads and hummus. It’s always a welcoming spot with friendly conversation. Even though I had another donut waiting for me back at the Airbnb, I wanted to try a new spot for another sweet treat. Next door to Nabil’s is French Confection – its cases are filled with delectable desserts and pastries of Southern France. I chose an unreal slice of cheesecake.

More of my recommendations for food/drink in the surrounding area: Merit Brewing, Work Progress, The Brain, Smalls Coffee, Mesa, Zyla’s, Bar Sazerac, The Mule, Absinthe Hamilton (they have food now too!).

After a relaxing evening of Netflix and chillin, it came time to hit the hay. I have to say this was the comfiest bed in the world! For a whimsical touch, the lights could turn off and on with two claps.
