Big Scoops Ice Cream 2 Duke Street
Take-out only ice cream joint Big Scoops opened this spring along James South. They’re open seven days a week, making it an ideal spot to hit when you’re craving a cone. And prepare yourself – they don’t call it Big Scoops for nothing!
Big Scoops has one location already on Upper Sherman, but I really like strolling around the James South neighbourhood. I just came from visiting James Street Bookseller and I would like to explore more shops along that street.
Supporting another local business, the owners of Big Scoops serve up ice cream from Hewitt’s Dairy. What a difference in quality – when you have Hewitt’s, it makes you never want to eat any store-bought brands again, if you can help it. Hewitt’s is so creamy and substantial, but not too heavy.
So many flavours stared me down – Blueberry Cheesecake, Mint Chocolate Chip, Orange Pineapple, Bubble Gum, Peanut Butter Caramel Fudge, Chocolate Raspberry (a new one!) and more. Be on the lookout for even more new flavours – they just added Creamsicle.
I already ate lunch, over at The Ship, so I wanted something light. I chose Coconut and it is delicious! The “small” is two generous scoops. Next time I’ll mix things up and pick two different flavours. I’ll get a waffle cone next time, too. That seems like the best way to hold all those scoops!
