The Eye of Faith 126 James Street North (Basement)

It’s high time I blog about my friends, The Eye of Faith! I first caught wind of the shop through their online presence on Facebook and their blog. I was intrigued by their aesthetic right away and their blog is fantastic and well curated. I first met co-owners Paul Heaton and Aaron Duarte in April at my circus-themed double birthday celebration with Mathieu Brazeau of James North General Store. Meeting them as we were dressed up in our circus ensembles was really a fitting first introduction to the stylish duo!

I later chatted with Paul and Aaron on CFMU [Listen to the episode!] before setting foot in the shop and my first official visit was during May’s Art Crawl.

The Eye of Faith, the blog, was established on November 11, 2011 (good numerology vibes there with the 11/11/11!). Paul and Aaron always had a passion for vintage and wanted to share their fashion inspirations. They had been collecting over the years, and began with an online shop before starting to sell their goods at flea markets in January 2012.

Paul and Aaron made the leap to opening their own shop on James Street North in the spring of this year. It’s perfectly located in the basement of Hawk & Sparrow, another vintage staple to the street that I first visited back in – get this – Art Crawl in November 2011! The numerology vibes are still going strong. The two shops make a great pair and even shared a booth together at this year’s Vintage Marketplace.

Eye of Faith specializes in menswear but they have women’s apparel as well, and all kinds of odds and ends – vintage photographs, magazines, accessories, and more. Being in the basement, it feels like stepping into someone’s home where they store all their treasures. As they said, everything has a story.

Paul and Aaron also have a background in photography and styling. Looking at past shoots that they’ve styled really shows they have the “eye”! I love following their updates on Instagram and Facebook and seeing shots from their shoots along with other daily inspirations.

If you haven’t been, you simply must take a trip down the rabbit hole to The Eye of Faith and dig through their treasures. They’re a welcomed addition to the city’s fashion landscape.
