Mex-I-Can 107 James Street North

In keeping with the blog’s tradition, May is the time for a fiesta. I Heart Hamilton began and celebrated its first anniversary with Mexican food, and I knew that I had to ring in year two with a little Mex-I-Can!

My friend Luisa and I brought our appetites (I told her in advance of the restaurant’s big portions) and sat down in the bright and casual environment. There were even more colourful paintings up on the walls than I remembered, and we had a prime spot to overlook the space, on a raised platform next to the kitchen.

Mex-I-Can’s menu is filled with standard dishes like burritos, tamales, enchiladas, and quesadillas. The food was slightly more expensive than what I usually do, but it was a night of celebration, after all.

Along with a few complimentary chips, Luisa and I decided to share the guacamole appetizer to start. The guacamole is delicious! I’ve been digging into avocados more lately and look forward to attempting to make my own guac this summer.

For my main meal, I ordered to chalupa dish, a soft, pancake-like tortilla (I opted for the veggie version). The platters come with side of rice and refried beans. Given the choice of a salad or guacamole, I went with more guac. I couldn’t resist! The tasty dip also helped combat the spicy foods. I ordered it in “mild” and it was just enough of a kick for me.

We were super stuffed and satisfied with our meals. It was a festive dinner and a fun way to wish I Heart Hamilton a Happy Anniversary!
